Located at a distance of 38km from Lansdowne is situated this beautiful temple with the name of Tarkeshwar Mahadev. The temple is also located at a distance of just 70km from Kotdwara.
The temple is located at a peaceful location, about an hour's drive from Lansdowne. The road to reach the temple is in good condition and the last 500 meters is a walkable stretch among devdaar and pine trees to reach the temple. During the early spring season, one can find Buransh flowers along the temple path. Buransh flowers are used to make the juices during summers.
About the Temple:
As the name suggests, this is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a meditation center and two dharamshaalas near temple. There are a couple of kunds and water pools for the devotees to take water from and offer to Lord Shiva in the temple. The water from the kund is neat and clean and can be used for drinking as well. The dharamshaala offers facility for overnight stay for the tourists visiting the temple, with minimal facilities. During winters, it could be really chilled to stay there. There is a provision for carrying out homa (havan) besides the temple. Lots of localites visit the temple on special occassions like Shivratri. There are a plenty of monkeys and langurs around the temple. However over the period of time, wild animals like tigers and beer have diminished.
History of the Temple:
It is believed that a devil with the name Tarkeshwar meditated here. Lord Shiva became happy with his elongated meditation and gave him boon to be eternal. Taking unfair advantage of the boon, Tarkeshwar started evil activities like killing the saints and causing harm to the nature. Later, Kartikeyan, son of Lord Shiva killed Tarkeshwar. Realizing his fault, Tarkeshwar pardoned Lord Shiva at the time of death. Lord Shiva again booned him that Tarkeshwar will be worshipped even in Kalyug.
The temple is located at about one hour drive from Lansdowne and last 500 meters is a walkable distance to be covered on foot.
