The hill station Ranikhet is located in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. The town is spread across two ridges with varied altitude as the upper area which is known as Chaubatia is situated at an elevation of 2,116 metres above the sea level while the other region is situated at an elevation of 1,829 metres above the sea level. It is a cantonment town which was developed by the British and is entirely managed by the Indian Army. Ranikhet is also home to the Kumaon and Naga Regiment as well as Military Hospital in the Kumaon region of the state. The town of Ranikhet is spread in an area of 21.76 square kilometres.

The name Ranikhet was derived from a local legend that it was at this place where Raja Sudhardev won the heart of his queen, Rani Padmini who chose the area as her residence, giving it the name Ranikhet, thoughno place exists in the area. The headquarters of Kumaon Regiment were established by the Britishers in 1869 in Ranikhet and the place was used as a retreat from the summer heat by the Britishers.

The festival is of great importance to women who wish to be blessed with a child and the women hold lamps in their hand through the entire night to appease Goddess Nanda and Sunanda. Other Hindu festivals like Basant Panchmi, Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Shivratri, Janmashtmi and Ram Navmi are also celebrated with pomp and pleasure by the people of Ranikhet.
