According to the mythology while Lord Shiva was carrying the Dead body of his wife sati, the various parts of her body fell in different parts. Her eyes fell at Nainital which is from where the Naini Lake, Naina Devi Temple and Nainital got their names. 
The town was the summer residence of the Governor of United Provinces during the British Raj and it is the best Architectural Building of Nainital, The Governor’s House which is now open for visitors to see.

Some of the most famous festivals and fairs in Naintal include Maa Nanda Devi Mela which is held in the mnoth of September and a huge crowd of devotees is witnessed at that time. Phooldeyi is another festival celebrated somewhere around March and April where young girls put flowers of the season on the entrance of every house. Bikhauti is the first day of Navratras when women sow seven types of grains. Nainital Shrad Utsav or the Nainital Autumn festival is one of the major festivals of the town. There is a cultural dance show organised with various singers are invited. There are many other festivals celebrated in Naintal.
