The temple was built on the upper edge of the lake and was destroyed by the landships of 1880 in Nainital. It was replaced by the present structure which is near the lake. The presiding deity of the temple is Maa Naina Devi who is represented by two eyes. Nainital is one of the 64 Shaktipeeths. The gate to the temple is marked by a gigantic Peepal tree to the left. There are idols of Hanuman and lord Ganesh. There are 3 deities Mata Kali, Naina Devi and Lord Ganesh. Every year Bhadrapad Shukla Ashtami which is statue immersion ceremony celebrated.
When sati, the wife of Lord Shiva was unable to bear the insult when her father King Daksha refused to invite Sati and Lord Shiva for a Yajna, she burnt herself to death. While Lord Shiva was carrying her body in his arms, her body fell on various places on Earth and Naina Dei Temple is believed that the Naina Devi Temple is built on the spot where the eyes (Naina) of the goddess are assumed to have fallen.
One can reach the temple easily by walk or taking a rikshaw or by a taxi.
