The city of Haridwar was at one time known as Mayanagri as it is the place where the ancient temple of Maya Devi is located. The temple is a must visit to the people visiting the city and it is very near to Har ki Pauri which is another main attraction of the city. The hindu goddesses Kali and Kamakhya are present in the inner shrine of the temple. 
The Maya Devi Temple is a siddh peeth in Haridwar like the Mansa Devi Temple and Chandi Devi Temple which makes a trio in which people visiting to the city surely visit and try visiting all the three siddh peeths in a single day. 
The history of the city is very closely in relation with Maya Devi Temple. It is believed that the heart and navel of Sati fell in the region where the temple resides today. The goddess Maya Devi is believed to be an incarnation of goddess Sati. The history of this temple dated back to 11th century and this temple is one of the most ancient temples in the city. The temple is considered to be the vertex of all the other temples in the holy city of Haridwar.
