Kausani is a hill station and village situated at an elevation of 1,890 metres above the water mark. The Administrative headquarters of Bageshwar district is situated in Kausani. Kausani lies atop a ridge amidst dense pine trees overlooking Someshwar Valley on one side and Garur and Katyuri valley on the other. Kausani is a part of the Lesser Himalayas and is the origin of the Kosi river which has very fertile banks known as seras.

Kausani is famous for the tea which is grown here. There is a variety of tea which is grown and processed at the place and is directly imported from here to various countries. Kausani is a famous Hill-station and is also known for the local shawls and the woollens that are woven here. The natural beauty of the place is also a major attraction of Kausani. One can also find various Handicraft items which are also very famous in the town.

Kausani is a beautiful town amidst the green pastures and various tourist attractions which make the place a delight for tourists and nature lovers. The “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi called Kausani “The Switzerland of India” while he once visited the town of Bageshwar District of the Kumaon Region in Uttarakhand. The place gives a panoramic view of the various mountains of the Himalayas including Nanda Devi Peak, Trishul and Panchachuli Peaks. There are many trekking destinations near the town and the town is one of the major attractions for tourists visiting Kumaon region.

Kausani was situated in the Almora  district during the Independence of India in 1947 till September 1997 after which Bageshwar District was carved out of Almora District and Kausani was relocated in the map as a part of Bageshwar District of Uttarakhand.

The major festival celebrated in Kausani is the Nanda Devi Mela which is celebrated with great zeal in Kausani in the month of October.Some other festivals include Khatarua and Phooldei. All the other major festivals celebrated by the Hindus like Basant panchmi, Holi, Diwali, Kartik Purnima, Maha Shivratri and other are celebrated with pomp and pleasure by the people of Kausani.
