Gandhi Sarovar which is also known as Chorbari Tal is one of the two snouts of the Chorbari Glacier and the lake is a beautiful scenic place where one can spot the Kailash Parvat. This is the place from where the Mandakini River originates and it is situated on the mouth of Chorbari Bamak Glacier. The lake is also known as Kanti Sarovar. The lake is visited by tourists in summer but not in large number because of the trekking route. It is advised to visit the lake in early morning as the weather changes in the region abdruptly. There is a beautiful Waterfall known as the Madhu Ganga Waterfall which is enroute along with the beautiful grassy fields of the lake.
As per the scripts Lord Shiva, who is known as the Adi Guru or the first guru chose the banks of this lake to transmit yoga to Saptarshis. In 1948, some of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in the lake after which the place came to be known as Gandhi Sarovar.
One has to trek a distance of about 4 kilometres from the Kedarnath Temple to reach the Gandhi Sarovar.
