The Temple is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Golu Devta Temple is located at a distance of 9 kilometres from Almora.
Chitai Golu Devta Temple is considered as the most sacred temple of Golu Devta among all the other temples in Almora. It is believes that if someone worships here with a clear conscience, their wishes are granted by Chitai Golu Devta. Worshippers bring bells in the temple as it is believed that God asks for in propitiation in the form bell. Hence one can see a large number of bells stung in the temple which are of different sizes. The offerings to the temple can be purchased from the shop outside the temple. Devotees also pin letters in the temple as it is said that anyone can seek Golu Devta’s divine intervention by writing to him.
It is believed that Golu Devta was the son of Katyuri King Jhall Rai and he was general in the army of Chand King Baz Bahadur. It is believed that if you tie a bell in the neck of a sacred cow, the ringing equals to 1000 bells in a holy temple. Lord Golu is worshipped by offering ghee, milk and curd.
