Different from the actual Chardham Yatra of India which includes Badrinath dham, Dwarka Temple, Puri Temple and Rameshwaram temple, the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand is often referred to as Chota Chardham because all the four abodes are in Uttarakhand state only. According to Hindu mythology, one must go on Chardham Yatra at least once in one’s lifetime. The Chardham Yatra is believed to wash the devotee’s sins and opens the gate to Salvation (or Moksha).

Adi Shankaracharya coined the term Chardham and he was the first to achieve Moksha (or Liberation). It is supposed to be carried from west to east i.e. in a clockwise direction as it is considered good (or shubh) according to Hindu mythology. Hence this holy Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand begins from Yamunotri. Second destination of the Yatra is Gangotri. Then it proceeds towards Kedarnath and finally ending at Badrinath Dham.
