Almora is a town in the Kumaon Region of Uttarakhant which is situated at an average elevation of 1638 metres above the sea level. Almora is a Municipal Board and a cantonment town in the Almora District of Uttarakhand. Almora owes its name to a tiny plant named ‘Kilmora’ which is found in the nearby regions. The hill station town of Almora is shaped like a Horse-shoe and it boasts the pre-British Heritage.
The town of Almora is famous for Angora clothes made from the Angora rabbit’s fur. Copper vessels are also one of the most famous things in Almora. Unique handicrafts and delicious cuisines also make the town of Almora very popular.

Almora was founded in 1568 by Kalyan Chand who was a ruler of the Chand Dynasty. Prior to this ruler the region was under Katyuri King Bhaichaldeo who donated a part of Almora to Sri Chand Tiwari. The place where the cantonment is located was known as Lalmandi. The Parbateshwar Temple in the town was renamed twice to become the present Nanda Devi Temple. The Gorkhas have ruled in the region for over 20 years.
Some of the famous festivals celebrated in Almora are the Nanda Devi Fair which attracts a large number of devotees from faraway lands to come and be a part of the fair. The other festivals like Diwali and Holi are also celebrated with pomp in the town.
